Immunobiology & Experimental Pathology

Overview:

Considered the basic science division, its mission is to give the department a clear strength in the practice of basic science and also to augment its teaching with regard to basic science. It focuses dually on immunology and on the biophysical aspects of diseases, including cardiovascular. Individuals in the division, exclusively researchers and teachers, maintain leadership roles in the Abramson Cancer Center and in several graduate programs.

Historically a national leader, this is probably the preeminent immunology division within a pathology department anywhere. Here at The University of Pennsylvania, one of the few places where the basic science divisions and clinical practices are still linked, it bridges medical school and health services. Resulting advantages to both include providing resources, intellectual and financial; fostering translational research; ensuring that basic science observations are applied towards patient treatment and diagnosis; and establishing accessibility and dialogue between clinicians and basic scientists.

Highlights:

  • Runs singular weekly colloquium seminar series bringing in immunology investigators from worldwide
  • Faculty publishes in high-tiered journals, holds editorial board positions, serves(d) as presidents of major national organizations, chairs(ed) national committees
  • Facilitates joint graduate training program with immunologists from NIH who have adjunct appointments in division
  • Organizes, together with the American Association of Immunologists, two introductory immunology courses for trainees from worldwide
  • Benefits from project grants from the National Institutes of Allergy and Immunology, the Aging Institute and the National Cancer Institute
