Fellowship Programs

Overview

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine sponsors nine nationally-recognized clinical fellowships, of which eight are ACGME-accredited, in these disciplines:
  • surgical pathology
  • gastrointestinal/liver pathology
  • cytopathology
  • neuropathology
  • hematopathology
  • molecular pathology
  • transfusion medicine
  • clinical microbiology
  • clinical chemistry

Highlights

Significant fellowship-oriented accomplishments in recent years included:
  • The cytopathology, neuropathology, transfusion medicine and hematopathology
  • fellowships all successfully obtained re-accreditation from the ACGME. The clinical microbiology program was re-accredited by the American Academy of Microbiology and is also seeking ACGME accreditation. These fellowships are generally recognized as among the very best of their kind in the country.
  • The molecular genetic pathology fellowship obtained ACGME accreditation in 2002, making it one of the first such accredited programs in the country.
  • The Department expanded its highly competitive surgical pathology fellowship from 2 to 5 slots over the time period 1999-2000.
  • The Department developed a new GI/liver pathology fellowship in 1999, which has been very successful.
  • Success of the Department’s fellowship programs is well illustrated by the experience of the Training Program in Transfusion Medicine, in which 22 of the 28 trainees completing it since inception are currently directors or associate directors of an academic program in Transfusion Medicine.
