Frequently Asked Questions

What are the general requirements for applying to the residency program?
All applications are accepted via ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) only. For information, go to: http://www.aamc.org/eras. Paper applications will not be considered.

U.S. medical graduates are required to provide a completed ERAS application, curriculum vitae, personal statement, dean’s letter and three (3) current letters of recommendation.

International medical graduates are required to provide a completed ERAS application, curriculum vitae, personal statement, three (3) current letters of recommendation, a current ECFMG certificate and USMLE scores, steps 1 and 2.

Who must apply through the matching program?
Only seniors graduating from United States medical schools are required to apply through the Match. U.S. graduates who have done any post-graduate (post-MD) training are not required to apply through the Match; nor are international medical graduates or those applying for other than a first-year position.

When is the application deadline?
November 15th of each year.

Are applicants accepted outside the Match?
Yes, if a position should arise during the course of the year.

How many positions are offered?
Generally, approximately eight (8) first-year positions.

Are any upper level positions offered?
Occasionally a position will open up. Inquire to: brodam@uphs.upenn.edu.

How is it determined who will be invited for an interview?
Each completed application is reviewed by the Residency Selection Committee and a decision is made as to whether to offer an interview.  Interview invitations are extended via email and a mutually convenient date is arranged, generally from November 1 through January 31.

Due to the large number of applications received each year from well-qualified individuals, only a small group of applicants are invited for interviews.

What are the research and funding opportunities available to residents in Pathology?
See department research web link

Does the Department sponsor visas?
Yes, H1 visas and J1 visas are sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania and its Hospital, respectively.

Is there a minimum USMLE score?
No; however, those who have been competitive usually have an average score of 85 or above.
