Clinical Pathology (Laboratory Medicine)
The 3-year training program in Laboratory Medicine begins with 18 months of training in core clinical rotations, including Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine, Molecular Genetic Pathology, Hematopathology, Immunology/Flow Cytometry, Clinical Chemistry, Coagulation and Microbiology. Clinical training in these areas is generally structured as 3-month rotation blocks.
Then the remaining 18 months may be used for clinical elective rotations at HUP or affiliated institutions, and may include pertinent rotations in Anatomic Pathology and/or additional Laboratory Medicine rotations at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. At least 12 months of this elective time will be spent in clinical rotations, as required by the American Board of Pathology. The remaining 6 months may be utilized for research or additional clinical rotations, depending upon the interests and goals of the individual trainee.
