Combined Pathology-Anatomic / Clinical Pathology

This integrated training program in Anatomic Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (Clinical Pathology) is of four years duration.  More than three years (43 months) will be spent in core clinical rotations, 25 months in Anatomic Pathology and 18 months in Laboratory Medicine.  Rotations in Anatomic Pathology include Surgical Pathology (12 months), Medical Pathology (Autopsy, 5 months), Cytopathology (4 months), Pediatric Pathology, Dermatopathology and Neuropathology, Forensic Pathology, and Bone/Soft Tissue Pathology (1 month each).  In Laboratory Medicine, residents complete 18 months of clinical training in the following areas: Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine, Molecular Genetic Pathology, Hematopathology, Immunology/Flow Cytometry, Clinical Chemistry, Coagulation and Microbiology.  Core rotations are completed in an integrated fashion throughout the training period; first-year residents typically complete six months of rotations in both Anatomic Pathology and Laboratory Medicine during their initial year of training.

These core clinical requirements allow five months of elective time for additional clinical rotations at HUP or affiliated institutions, as well as research.  The composition of this elective/research time will vary among residents and be tailored to suit individual interests and career goals.
