Residents have found a wide variety of housing to be quite satisfactory and usually less expensive than in other major U.S. cities and suburbs. Some prefer apartments in Center City or Society Hill areas downtown, others live within walking distance in the residential area west of the Hospital. Those who do not mind a 20-minute commute will find garden apartments in the near Philadelphia suburbs or may be able to find small houses for rent. Nearby college communities include Bryn Mawr, Haverford, Rosemont, Swarthmore, and Villanova. A few residents live in New Jersey and commute across the Delaware River.
