Hematopathology Fellowship
Overview: The goal of this one or two-year accredited fellowship is to provide the diagnostic skills and in-depth knowledge of both pediatric and adult Hematopathology as well as the molecular skills needed for successful careers in academic Hematopathology.
Year 1: The fellow, with staff, is responsible for work-up and sign-out of bone marrows, lymph nodes, and other surgical pathology specimens with suspected lymphoproliferative disorders, including review of relevant hematologic data, peripheral smears, bone marrow aspirate smears, histologic sections, cytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, immunophenotyping by four color flow Cytometry, molecular analysis for gene rearrangement, and cytogenetics. He/she is responsible for diagnostic evaluation and triage of fresh material sent to surgical pathology for frozen sections for possible lymphoproliferative disorders. The fellow also serves as the primary point of communication between Hematopathology and hematology/oncology, gaining hands-on experience in laboratory hematology and coagulation, including interpretation of laboratory studies and laboratory management. Two months of elective time in either immunopathology or molecular pathology, or clinical research, are provided. Participation in a clinical project(s) is strongly encouraged.
Year 2: An additional year is offered to highly qualified applicants to pursue in-depth research on a problem in hematology or neoplasia. Clinical responsibility during this time is limited to two months as a junior Hematopathology attending, allowing the fellow to continue developing diagnostic skills while conducting research.
Requirements:Applicants must have completed pathology training in an AMA-approved pathology residency program in the United States or Canada and be Board eligible by the start of the Hematopathology fellowship. Combined AP/CP training is recommended, but highly qualified AP-only or CP-only applicants will also be considered. A strong interest in laboratory investigation and/or previous research experience is desirable.
Stipends:Commensurate with level of training.
