Overview:
This ACGME accredited program is aimed toward the development of academically oriented surgical pathologists with a subspecialty interest in gastrointestinal and liver pathology. To that end, the first year is devoted to clinical duties including the development of research projects while the second year is fully devoted to research endeavors, the choice of which may come from the entire university community. During year one, the fellow is responsible for the GI and Liver pathology consult service within the section of surgical pathology and numerous conferences involving the departments of medicine, surgery, and radiology. The clinical service encounters a wide variety of cases from the very active liver transplant, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology, and oncology programs. The diverse and strong academic research environment of the Medical Center serves as a rich source from which the fellow may chose a research project to carry out during year two.
