Blood Bank
Overview:The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) is located on the Philadelphia campus of the University of Pennsylvania in close proximity to many research centers, which together create a stimulating clinical and research environment. This program is designed to offer the fellow exposure to all areas of clinical transfusion medicine and to provide opportunities for investigational (basic and applied) studies. The Blood Bank at HUP (a 725-bed facility) is clinically active in both adult and neonatal transfusion practices. The activities of the department include an accredited reference laboratory, compatibility testing, component preparation, histocompatibility testing, infectious diseases serology, hematopoietic stem cell processing for transplantation (peripheral blood, autologous and allogeneic bone marrow, umbilical cord blood), therapeutic hemapheresis and drug infusion service. Transfusion Medicine is a multidisciplinary field and as such the program offers research opportunities in molecular and structural immunology, genetics, coagulation, stem cell biology and microbiology. This program is approved by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education and supported by the National Institutes of Health.
