Clinical Pathology - Division of Laboratory Medicine
Overview:The faculty members at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) are among 25 directly involved in the different sections within Laboratory Medicine, augmented by additional faculty with similar primary interests at neighboring Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Presbyterian Medical Center (PMC) in West Philadelphia, and Pennsylvania Hospital (PAH) in Center City.
The armamentarium of tests offered through this division’s clinical laboratories is one of the largest for an academic medical center in the United States in support of UPHS’ three hospitals, their out-patient practices, and the System’s 80 community physician practices.
The University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) was one of the pioneering academic medical centers nationwide to develop a facility which performs molecular pathology testing, with one of the largest faculty committed to this subdiscipline.
The Division has several unique programs in place that reduce inappropriate test ordering and promote collaborative interactions with clinicians. As well, it has developed extensive interactions with leading companies in the diagnostic industry to validate new diagnostic tests. Overriding this is the Division’s unique database of more than 100 million test results matched with patient diagnoses, that is being used to assess the diagnostic utility of clinical laboratory tests and to enhance quality assurance.
Eighteen faculty have extramurally funded research programs in diverse areas, including: the genetic basis of development; immunity and neurodegenerative disease; autoimmunity; thrombosis and hemorrhage, atherosclerosis, pathogenesis of HIV and other viral and microbial disorders.
Most sections of the Division provide fellowship training through accredited programs as well as highly-rated residency training. Children’s Hospital faculty is intimately involved in the latter.
Highlights:While all sections and services within the Division are profiled separately on this website, following are some selected highlights:
- HUP is one of the nation’s pioneering hospitals in total laboratory automation
- Both the Coagulation and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring laboratories have national outreach programs, the latter working closely with pharmaceutical companies to make available to other pioneering medical centers the testing of blood concentrations of these immunosuppressant drugs.
- The Coagulation Laboratory provides consultations to physicians caring for patients with complex coagulopathies.
- The Flow Cytometry and Tissue Typing laboratories have extensive regional outreach programs.
- The Clinical Chemistry Section began a diagnostic proteomics facility in July 2005 and is developing a nanotechnology center.
- The Clinical Microbiology Section is a leading laboratory for infections diseases diagnostics and consultative services. The addition of a new faculty member will enable further expansion of the molecular virology service.
