Clinical Services
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a wide spectrum of clinical support services, known for their operational excellence and strong academic bent. Its five clinical service divisions embrace cutting-edge technologies and automation, and strive to:
- offer comprehensive tissue diagnostics, that leverages extensive subspecialty expertise and cutting-edge molecular and imaging tools
- provide a broad gamut of Transfusion Medicine services, encompassing blood banking, apheresis/infusion, and stem cell therapeutics
- exploit informatics to strengthen operational performance (including an Anatomic Pathology Informatics program, a Laboratory Data Warehouse, an integrated HLA database system, and web portals)
- handle increasing specimen volumes driven by a large outreach business
- establish working relationships with industrial partners
- achieve high productivity at the top of national benchmark surveys
- spearhead major cost-saving initiatives to decrease test over-utilization
- increasingly invoke electronic handling of laboratory results
- promote numerous patient safety initiatives within the clinical laboratories
Together with top-rate faculty who are leading major research initiatives in clinical laboratory diagnostics, the Department provides clinical services to clinicians and other health care-providers within the University of Pennsylvania Health System, while also serving as a top-tiered reference laboratory both regionally and nationally.
