Overview:The Clinical Immunology and Flow Cytometry Laboratory (see separate page) provides state-of-the art diagnostic services in cellular and humoral immunology and flow cytometry supporting clinical programs in a broad range of immune-mediated diseases, including: autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases, organ transplants, and bone marrow/hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Further, it serves as a reference laboratory for the Greater Philadelphia Region, to which it provides the highest quality cost-effective services. The laboratory developed and implemented an integrated HLA database system—OTTR (Organ Transplant Tracking Record)—acting as a beta site offering a technical platform within the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) network. This laboratory received the 2003 and 2005 UPHS Quality and Safety Awards.
The laboratory has key partnerships and collaborations in the areas of human immunogenetics, and performs HLA typing for the National Marrow Donor Registry. It alsoparticipates in the International Histocompatibility Working Group (IHWG) on KIR Genotyping. In the area of Clinical Transplantation Immunology, it is one of very few laboratories nationwide participating in immune mechanistic studies on human islet cell transplantation, sponsored by an NIH Islet Cell Transplant Consortium. It participated in a multi-center epidemiological study, funded by the NIH, involving donor/recipient Kidney transplant pairs from nine Delaware Valley transplant centers. Also, it participates in the Penn Autoimmunity Center of Excellence to assess immune responses with useful immune markers such as quantitation of lymphocyte subpopulations using cellular immune assays as well as flow cytometry.
Highlights:
- The multi-organ transplant programs (Kidney, Pancreas, Heart and Lung) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and the new Islet Cell transplantation program
- The autologous and the allogeneic bone marrow/hematopoeitic cell transplantation program at HUP
- 24-hour emergency HLA testing for cadaveric donors to support the multi-organ transplant programs
- Performs a variety of HLA testing by DNA-based, serologic and flow cytometry techniques
- Platelet transfusion
- Vaccine Clinical Trials and Disease Association studies
