Toxicology

Overview:

The Clinical Toxicology laboratory provides testing and consultative services for a variety of toxicological analyses, among them:
  • Bioanalysis to provide definitive identification and quantification
  • Toxins, therapeutic drugs and biomarkers of oxidant stress (utilizing mass spectral libraries of more than 50,000 drugs, toxins and their metabolites)
  • Other specialized bioanalyses, including renal calculi and unknown substances by FTIR infrared spectroscopy
  • Pharmacokinetic interpretation and reporting.
Pharmacokinetic software coupled with faculty review and interpretation is utilized to generate interpretative reports for busulfan testing and special requests for individual drug pharmacokinetic analyses.

Highlights:

  • A national reference laboratory for busulfan pharmacokinetic testing
  • A regional reference laboratory for sirolimus therapeutic drug monitoring
  • One of the first U.S. academic centers to introduce mycophenolic acid therapeutic drug monitoring, including interpretative reporting; testing program serves as a reference laboratory for unusual poisoning cases at Delaware Valley hospitals
  • Ongoing development of new test procedures in the Xenobiotic Toxicokinetic research laboratory
  • Major Alzheimers Disease testing center involving 800 patients and 49 sites throughout the US and Canada
  • Weekly case conference for residents highlights instructive cases in therapeutic drug monitoring and clinical toxicology.
