Surgical Pathology

Overview:

The Section of Surgical Pathology is the largest component of Anatomic Pathology, with some 15 faculty projected for 2006 complemented by at least 75 other personnel. This latter number includes experienced administrative support personnel, and highly trained, highly experienced pathologist’s assistants and histotechnologists who provide specialized support for tissue processing, as well as specialists in immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization.

The section receives approximately 30,000 specimens per year on which it provides tissue-based diagnoses, often with extensive additional information related to prognosis or treatment options.

Highlights:

The section’s major core strengths include:
  • its range and quality of diagnostic expertise using traditional techniques
  • its record as an innovator in commonly used ancillary techniques like immunohistochemistry
  • its ability to rapidly apply molecular techniques as they become standard (such as FISH testing for breast cancer), and to pursue the development of innovative techniques such as expression profiling of tissues, or hyperspectral imaging for multi-parameter testing on the single slide.
